I used the H last week. Went out last night to move it in the yard and the engine is stuck. Super confused. Nothing out of the ordinary happened when last ran.

Right or wrong, my 6 volt 1950 "H" used to get stuck when I tried to start it, I got tired of loosening up the starter and reattaching it. I put 12 volt alternator and battery on it. Spins so fast now it never has got stuck since. I have heard that is not the thing to do, but worked for me. So far.

Wouldn't I be able to turn the crank by hand if the starter were jambed? Can the starter actually stop the crank from turning? I have 12 volt on the tractor.

Easy way to see is to just loosen up the two starter bolts, enough, loosen up the starter, and see if it makes everything loose.

I have the same problem with mine sometimes - yes the starter will "freeze" the engine, even with 12 volts. You won't be able to move it with the crank either.

If you don't want to pull the starter loose then just put it in fifth gear and rock it will release the starter also. Have done it on our H when out and no wrench.

Yes they get stuck real ad sometimes and the best is just loosen up the starter from the engine. Take a good look at the bendix and the teeth on the ring gear when you have the starter out. If the flyheel ring gear is bad you mite need to replace it. Usually a new bendix will help a bunch. But in time the ring gear will need replaced if that area is real bad. But you realy wont know till the starter is removed when its locked up. Engines will usually stop at the same position.

My dad has a Super H and the same thing happened. We thought that the motor had locked up. I pulled the starter off and noticed that the drive gear on the bendix had a bad bur on it so I filed it down and never had the problem again.

There is a new cushion starter drive that seems to cure 90% of the jambibng issue. Available many places (small weak spring rether than a big nasty one. Works and cheap. Jim

When I was a kid back in the late 1940's early 1950's my Grand Father had an H that the starter locked quite often. As I remember it, he had a few magic words he spoke over it, mom said we were not to use those magic words, then he would put it in 5th gear, get in front of a rear tire and push a coupla hard pushes, get back on the tractor and it would start right up. The tractor couldn't be real old at the time.

If the starter can turn the crankshaft it sure can stop it from turning when locked in the teeth of the ring gear.

Check the starter; check the starter; check the starter! My H did the same thing. I loosen the bolts on the starter, hear a "snap", tighten it back up, and voila!. Needed a new bendix.
All will be good with your tractor world once again.
Dave

Who knew? Pulled the starter and put it back in....away we go problem solved...I had no idea that the starter could stop me from turning the engine over...thanks everyone....once again I am reminded just how simple of a machine these really are. Gotta love em... Someone should let china know how real machinery is created.

Dairy farmer I use to work for had a 2555 Deere that the starter locked the engine. We tried to pull it and the tractor twisted so much that the one back wheel came off the ground and it pulled the 4440 down some. So yes it can happen if I remember right we took the starter out and it was parked on the barn ramp for about a week before he got the starter back from being rebuilt
