IH 560 diesel head bolts

My mechanic says he ordered head bolts over 3 weeks ago for our 560 diesel & they still don't have them in. Can we use a grade 8 bolt instead? Nothing special here from what I can see or is there a stretch factor in the IH bolt?

I'd stud it. Use 12pt. flange nuts and a heavy washer designed for engine and torquing applications. Any good machine shop should be able to source these parts. Throw the bolts and especially the spacers in the trash.

Studs, along with machine work, using the heavier press-fit sleeves from later D-282's, and a quality head gasket made dad's 560 stop eating head gaskets and after 50 years finally made a real engine out of that D-282.

Unless you are adventurous, or building a hot-rod, I'd use the OEM bolts.

Sounds to me like your "mechanic" is blowing smoke up your nether regions. WHY not go to the Official FIAT site I've linked below and get the part numbers and check with your local dealer as to availability???
560, and stuff

Thanks Bob for the link. Very helpful. Its one of those things you trust gets done right when your tractor leaves the farm for repairs. Had it been a gas model, we would of done the job ourselves. In defense of my mechanic, he isnt blowing smoke either. This dealership here in NW Wisconsin is better off closing its doors. After sharing my experience lately with hard time getting head bolts for our 560 diesel, I have heard many who wont go there anymore for parts and drive 45 miles east instead. Had I known this problem with this particular dealership getting head bolts sooner, I would of done the same and dealt with people who really care instead of punching a clock.
