double lip seal

I'm replacing the seal on the shaft coming out of the rearend that drives the belly pump. I know this question has been asked before but couldn't remember the answer. Do I need to put 2 seals back in as this is a double lip seal or will one work. Thanks Larry

Only one is needed. place it such that the lip/s touches a different location on the drive. I put chassis grease on them before installation to assure the lips are lubed immediately. Only polish the coupling round and round, not along its axis. this reduces seal wear. Jim.

One seal placed in non worn area will work fine. The old seal is not really a double lip seal. It is two separate seals inside of a outer shell and installed as one piece. What we refer to as a double lip seal has one primary lip, normally spring loaded, and a secondary lip facing opposite direction to keep dirt out. Some seals, like on axles of newer tractors, have several fine lips all facing toward oil and maybe one toward dirt side.
