Super A Steering Box Rebuild

Does anyone have first-hand experience with steering box rebuild kits available from the various sources? Are some better than others? They all claim to take the slop out of the steering wheel. I've got a little less than a quarter turn of free play in mine and the front wheels shimmy when driving on hard pavement. The tie-rod ends have been rebuilt, no play from them. Mine is a '49. It came with an Easy Ride seat so no serial number. Are the kits compatable with all years? The steering worm is welded onto the steering shaft! I find this incredible. Was the sector worm gear considered a wear part?

sounds like you have it torn down. the top bearing on the sector shaft is a problem for play. the bearing is all that i would replace, unless you see something else wrong.

The worm and shaft are one piece from the factory. I suppose the worm is welded, haven't had mine apart lately.

Ive done a bunch of them and 1/4 turn isnt bad. The bearing on the end of the steering shaft can be worn but now you have it apart its hard to tell. The way to check it is looking for end play when turning the steering wheel. You can check it out after you get all parts back together. If the gear is welded fast no worry about key being loose.

I was able to remove a lot of play from the (wide) front end on my '40 H by replacing the bushings in the trunnions.

If the spindle is loose, removing the slack in the gears might not make much difference.

also, no mentioned yet that at the last second when you knock the pin out, the axle will fall and it is VERY heavy.

I almost broke both hands when they twisted ugly between the axle and the tie rods as it fell. Didn't break anything but realized how luck I was.

Next time it comes apart, the axle will be looped to my front end loader !

Thanks for the warning about the axle. I'll be working with the heavy-duty cast iron axle! The only way for me to support it will be to build a cradle under it to catch it when it releases. Does this sound practical? I'm not yet sure how I'll get it back on.
