IH 684 Hydraulics

Hi, back again. Still having hydraulic issues with my IH 684. Power steering fails occasionally but comes back almost straight away & rest of hydraulics (loader & 3pt linkage) works fine one minute then jumpy as if air locked the next. When all is working OK there's plenty of power, lifting 2 bags full of horse muck effortlessly, and the 3 pt auto hitch picks up a 3 ton trailer and the remote tips it with no problem, but then without warning the powers gone and the loader struggles to raise itself with no load on!!! I guess I need to change the hydraulic oil and filter and start from there. Does anyone know the recommended oil type/viscosity (I have no service manual). Also the park brake does not work, what sort of a job is it to replace the band and where would be the best (cheapest) place to get one (UK).
Also where should the level be on the hydraulic oil dipstick, there's about 1/2" oil on the bottom of the stick, but I can't see a top mark. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think you have dirty oil Stuart, it probably smells burnt too? All the valve, parts, etc in that system were designed to work with spotless clean hydraulic oil, and at this point they are probably covered with something like shellac. You may need to change it a few times at this point [no way to flush or clean the internals there except by oil change] [and filter] Hydraulic oil should meet the specs fro HY-Tran. 9 gallons is expensive, but not as bad as parts and labor. IH recommended changing oil and filter every year or 1000 hours, if I remember right.

often folks use the wrong hydraulic fluid in these and here is what happens. these tractors are equipped with wet type disc brakes which require oil with a brak additive in to preserve the disc. if plain hydraulic oil has been in that tractor it will make the disc deteriorate and clog the filter causing many of the symptoms you described. I would drain it,refill with new Hytran and replace filter. may cure your problem

Thanks Mike. Although I did have the plug out of the flow divider and it didn't look too tarnished in there but who knows, I'll change the oil and filter and give it a go.

Thanks for the advice. I thought about using Morris Super Universal 10W/30 as it meets the requirements of MS1209 (according to the data sheet) and is avilable locally.
