Looking at 1952 H w/live hydraulics

I am going to look at a 1952 H with live hydraulics and "decent tires" either today or tomorrow. Supposedly it runs good, fairly recent rebuild. Narrow front end. This tractor will mainly pull wagons at fairs and go to tractor pulls. My buddy says his 1951 H has a "planter 1st gear" in it. If this one doesnt have this planter first, can I put it in?

I assume your friend is talking about the low, low first gear? Yes, you can put it in. IIRC you have to replace more than just first gear. I assume you want it for tractor pulling?

Buy it, the live hyd will be nice to have. How are the tires?

Edit - Sorry...you said "decent" If you are tractor pulling hopefully they are old, hard Firestone F&Rs.

He said the tires are not in need of replacing any time soon. No calcium in the rims. I informed him that I wanted to pull with it and he said the tires are just fine for that.. The live hydraulics are a very nice bonus in my eyes for other things.

New tires with long, soft lugs will fold over on a hard packed track. They also pile a bunch of dirt in front of the sled which creates more resistance.

We picked it up for 1100 bucks. Runs good. Had a miss but looks like a loose spark plug wire. No miss now. Came with the low low gear in it so I am very happy about that. Just a little tlc and she is ready to go.
