Farmall 450 rear diff fluid

There will be a pipe plug on the (left) side of the transmission case.If oil(Hy tran) runs out,its fine. You really need a book....Order one from these guys (YT)

Factory fill is 80-90W gear lube.

IF you FLUSH the housing and have replaced EVERY oil seal, you can use Hytran oil instead.

You CAN NOT mix Hytran with 80-90W gear lube.

If that tractor has a TA in it you have to use Hytrans oil. If it is TA delete you can use 80-90W gear oil. The oil in diff is also running through trans & TA.

I have a 450. Was told to use 80/90.
TA stopped working. Drained 80/90. Filled with diesel. Drove around about 15 minutes while putting in and out of TA. Drained that and left the plugs out for a couple of days. Filled with Hy Tran$$$.
TA worked great.
Good Luck

BUT you forgot to say that along with the 80-90 you had to add some other juice to it and THAT IS no longer avail. Just like a posi rear end ya have to ADD some juice to the 80-90 . Case 310 G crawlers us a 80 90 MINERAL oil and guy get that confused with 80-90 and it screws up the steering brakes. I H switched from the 80-90 to the Hy Trans sometime back then because of T/A 's not working when cold.

Bottom of the hole at a square head 1/2 inch pipe plug located on the mid left side of the tractor ahead of the clutch pedal. If refilling after draining, check another plug on the same side below the starter to make sure the oil is leveled out. Hy tran oil is recommended now with a t/a.
Original owners manual from around 1956 will say to use SAE-10 or SAE-10W with one quart of T/A transmission lubricant additive to each 4 gallons used.
Manual printed in 1958 can say use SAE-75 gear lubricant or the combination above. Temperatures always above 40 degrees SAE-80 gear oil may be used.

The oil debates have resurfaced . Hytran wasn't around in those days guys. But oh yes Hytran will save us all.

no debate if that tractor has a TA it needs Hytran.if TA delete 90 weight is good. I have a 450 Diesel that is facttory TA delet it also has trans driven PTO

Loosen the drain plug under the PTO shaft, until you get a fluid to leak out. If it is water, keep draining it until you get oil type fluid. If it is a tan or milky color, either drain it all out, or let it sit a couple of days so that the water will separate from the oil. Then drain out the water. Then check the fluid level by removing the pipe plugs on the left side of the housing.
