400 axle housing leak

One of the axle housings on my 400 is leaking and I was wondering if I can jack up the thing to release the weight , remove the bolts and move it torwards the wheel to put in a new gasket. I thought I could cut it at the top to go over the axle and silicone the cut. Can it be moved enough to slip in a new gasket?
Thanks.

The gasket alone won't do you much good. You have to remove the wheel and the end piece which contains the seal. Of course replace the gasket also. Don't try to remove the wheel by yourself. I use an engine hoist (cherry picker) and remove the rim and tire, any weights and then the wheel. The 1st time I removed a wheel and tire the hoist tipped over, luckily I was on the opposite side. IF you mean the gasket between the tractor and the housing -- yes people have done that.

when i had the axle out of the 560 it was a rubber o ring, no gasket there. i will look at my 400 to see if i can see a gasket but i dont think it has one.

It will move outward 1/2 inch or so. Clean and scrape well. Use a film of RTV silicone or #2 Permatex on the gasket Put a bit more on the cut. (at the very top!!) tighten to spec. Jim
