I recently found a 1954 super H. the question I have is it has a distillate hood but no small tank or bracket but the serial has a D J code. im sure the J is for Rockford clutch but unsure what the J is. thanks for your help.

IIRC it stands for Distillate. Many have had the tank removes as well as the shutters and controls. the most difficult to find component is the manifold combo. Due to rust and complexity of the heat control system. Jim

Ed - The "D" indicates it is equipped for 5,000 ft altitude. Uncertain what THAT means - but it's probably slightly higher compression pistons and a different carb orifice calibration.

My guess is your hood came off a distillate H or Super H.

Incidentally I own a pair of '53 Super H with the DJ code. How it wound up here in western NY (maximum altitude ~1,500 feet) is a mystery.

If possible, show a picture of the manifold, so we can see if it is gas or distillate, assuming it is original. If it is a gas manifold, your hood may not be original. The D on tractors as late as the Super series means 5000 ft pistons, A is distillate, B is kerosene.

Just an "improved" clutch that replaced the one(s) before it. Listed as J about the time the Super H and Super M appeared.

Bob, We are in the S. Tier, our '53 is a high altitude tractor too which doesn't mean much as it came out of Canada a few years back, but it is interesting because when we got it I started paying attention to that and have seen a few around the area, don't know why they were shipped here...just interesting!
