Farmall M no spark update and thanks

First I would like to thank everyone that helped on this. I finally understand how the ignition system should work its not just magical sorcery after all.

I removed the ballast after determining I had a 12v coil, still no spark. I check the resistance on the new set of points and determined they were bad so I cleaned the old points up and reinstalled them, had spark instantly.

I put the tractor back together and with a wiff of starting fluid she fired right up and it runs pretty good.
Here is a crappy video of a good tractor.

There are several other problems that need attention but I need to make a parts run before I even ask.

Thanks for all the help, the knowledge here is priceless.

Good to hear you're making progress.

To get the alternator to work now take the short wire that is on the alternator output post and plug it into the #2 terminal on the alternator.

Since you are now running 12 volts to the coil you can use that as a feed for the #1 terminal. You just need to take the resistor that you are no longer using for the coil and install it between the battery side of the coil and the #1 terminal on the alternator.

The resistor you have may not have enough resistor for this alternator application. If the engine wants to stay running after you shut off the switch you will need a resistor with a higher resistance or use a diode instead.

Always a thrill to hear that first start up and a real sense of satisfaction to bring them back to life, and you get to use the knowledge gained on the next one.
