656 Clutch Adjustment

I had a new clutch installed by a neighborhood mechanic but the adjustment seems off. The tractor would grind into gear. I checked the free travel and it seemed a bit long at 1-1/2". I adjusted it to what my book said at 1" but it still hangs when shifting into the first gear selected after you depress the clutch to the floor. It will shift fine to other gears after that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Really nothing , (1) the transmission is NOT synchronized (2) your tractor DOES NOT have a clutch or transmission break and the gears take a little time to slow down and stop . And now that you changed his settings provided he knew what he was doing and a lot don't you need to reset the T/A adjustments and at times on a 656 -666-686 have given me a fit due to ware . NOW IF you are still having gear grinding after ya slow the engine down to and ideal and depressing the clutch and WAITING 10-20 seconds for the gears to slow down and stop turning before jamming it into gear and it is still dragging then HUSTON YOU GOT A PROBLEM . This problem can be caused by a bad pilot bearing , a warped clutch disc from being drawen together by the frame bolts when going back together or your ace wrench holder messed with finger hight adjusment when he should not have OR the flywheel step was not ground to spec.'s IF he had the flywheel ground like he should have.

There seems to be some play in the shaft that is attached to the clutch linkage. Not sure what it would be called but it goes back into the housing. Is there a bearing in there or should it move side to side?

Yes there will be a little in and out movement . That is the CLUTCH release shaft and it is what works against the throw out bearing .
