460 diesel fuel system problem

Neighbor baught a 460 diesel, guy told him injection pump was leaking into crank case. so he took the pump off and replaced the seals. put it back together and couldn"t get it started, called me, I got it to start and run for 10-30 seconds at a time, then acts like it starves for fuel and dies. settling bowl is clean, new filters, lines all cleaned out, returns not plugged. when it runs it is smooth. told the guy to check engine oil level in morning incase seal went bad already. Is there anything in the pump that could cause this issue?

Pump most likely needs repair as retainer ring is failing and plugging the one way check valve at tank bottom return line. Test by leaving the 2 timing cover screws loose so fuel can leak from housing, if it runs then the pump needs repair and fitting cleaned or replaced. High housing pressure will shut down this type pump.

A decent mechanic is capable of removing and re-installing a diesel injection pump, but it takes special tools, equipment, and knowledge to successfully repair and/or rebuild any injection pump.

No, it is NOT a do-it-yourself job. Take the pump to a diesel shop.
