Odd problem with a Farmall 340 part 2

Well I found the problem and yes it was odd. Distributor drive gear is bad and lost a couple of teeth. The reason it was so hard to figure out was it would spin some times and then stop spinning which would in turn cause it to go out of timing and do odd things. Now to find a gear or maybe take a distributor off an H I have that I do not use and at least have the 340 running.

Is it possible for the cam not is not retained properly and is bouncing for and aft? Might not be possible on that engine.

Well on the IH distributor you have a tang then a set of gears off that tang. The gear on the distributor is what went bad and lost a few teeth so it would spin some times then not and in turn make for odd sort of start no start problems

I googled the part numbers and got an off-brand distributor for mine complete with shaft and gear for what Case IH wants for just the shaft/gear.

This site lists the distributor shaft for $26 or some such low price. My worry is if the one gear is bad is the drive gear also bad
