I am working on a M tractor not real sure of the year for my boss and we need to remove the pto shaft cover to get access to the bearings on the brakes. We have removed all boklts on the cover but cannot seem to get the cover to release so it can be removed. Any tips, hints info would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

By "bearings on the brakes" do you mean in the bull pinion gear carrier? Like you are going to take the PTO out and spin the bolts out of the axles? Then move the bull gears?

The pto should just come right out after you get the bolts out. No tricks there.

I thought I was in a similar situation with an H once, but it turned out that there was another bolt hiding under the grease.

If all the bolts have been removed my guess is that a sealant was used when the pto was last put back in & that's what's holding it. Use either a large dead blow hammer or place a piece of wood on top of the pto shaft & give it a rap. You may have to repeat the procedure on each side of the shaft.

It is my Bosses tractor and we were just going to change brake pads but when we tore into it we had balls from the bearings falling out from behind the brake drum. we have to pull that drum and he was told to do that we need to remove the pto to get at the bolts inside to replace the bearings. sorry if I am confusing but have done very little work on tractors this old.
