Farmall M for sale

There is a running Farmall M for sale I'd like to look at, been converted to 12 volt - otherwise all original, comes with 3 rather new tires and a 4th rear with some thread/lugs. I'm not concerned about the price, but need to know the top 10 things to check or ask when I drive 100+ miles to view this tractor - will attempt to post pics. What size rear tires should be on an "M"?? I'm looking for utility and not a parade tractor. I want a good functioning tractor - realizing I'm buying used and anything old & mechanical can "break". Thanks! all Big Red owners!

it looks like it is a distilate tractor,I see a hole for starter tank and controls for shutters. I don't think meny left .see if shutters are there and not rotted away. looks good from pic's,stumper

For a working/chore tractor I would check the radiator and look for serious oil leaks, try the brakes and steering and see that it is quiet and stays in all gears. Looks like it is a nice tractor from what I can see, if the price is good.

$800.00 +/-.Radaitor,allgears work,blue from exaust,'hitting' on all 4,no clunks/knocks/grouls,steering OK..Just some common sence things to look at.Looks like an early M.Magneto,'belly' pump,tricicle front.Average M.Damn good tractors.not much on an M to go wrong....

There aren't any major weak spots on every single tractor. Sloppy steering is really expensive and a pain to fix. It is a fairly common problem. The other thing that gets really sloppy are the clutch and brake pedals.

Check the inside of the gas tank. The paint is missing, so maybe it has been acid washed and not coated inside. Maybe it is fine, but I would bring a good flashlight to look in side of it.

Tire size is unimportant, I have had 11.2 x38's on them and I have even seen them with 18.4's. Clutch, engine condition, gear noise and steering are the big issues. $800 would be plenty from what I see, if all of the above are okay.

Modern equivalent of stock tire size is 13.6x38, however you commonly see 14.9x38 tires on M's too. I would not go bigger because you run into issues with not having enough power to turn them, and the tractor being excessively fast. Flotation and traction suffer if you go smaller.

I dont know where you are at, and if M's are scarce in your parts, but no way would I drive 100+ miles to look at that M unless it was basically free. You would be money ahead to wait and find one in better shape and closer. Just my opinion.

It looks like a good honest tractor.

I would only add that you might put it in 5th and see how it lugs. You don't have to get all the way up to 15mph, but you can get an idea of any governor response issues, blow-by, missing under load problems when you lug it in 5th gear.

They we're painted from the factory? How?

15.5s are actually smaller height than 14.9s...but anything bigger has a larger height.

has no extras like fenders, belt pulley PTO cover so plain tractor running sould be no more than 1200 here. Would cost about another 1200 up to restore. I have about 4000 in mine with no center draw bar. Came looking like that one.
