IH 1300 sickle mower problem - loose breakaway

Last 2 times I"ve tried to mow with this sickle mower the break away bar keeps breaking away. I"m trying to mow a river bank that has never been a problem in the past. In fact it even breaks away sometimes on level mowed grass with the pto off. Something must be loose somewhere but there are no adjustments on top of the breakaway plate. I did tighten the top spring but no help. Any one experience this and might offer a suggestion?

If I recall corrrectly there is a kindof a 'tooth" that the roller for the break-away engages on. Over time it gets worn down, and will no longer hold. I took mine to a GOOD welding shop, and he built it back up and re-shaped it with a grinder.

Good luck,
Ben

Thanks All.

Jeff, I don't have dimensions to have the breakaway arm rebuilt. That will be a last resort. It looks in pretty good shape.

Dean, I used bailing wire and was able to mow the bank with out a breakaway. My tractor is so light (IH 140) that if I hit a stump the right rear wheel will spin before tractor direction pulls right. Seems like this breakaway is a nuisance for my set up.

ejr - My parts manual shows 3 leaf springs; front, middle, and rear. When I look up from underneath these parts are covered by a latch support plate. I can't figure out where this tightening bolt is (not shown in parts manual). Do I have to drop this support plate to get to the spring tightening bolt? Will any thing fall out if I remove this plate? Wish I had a service manual.

Their is a bolt that you can see that comes out in the cast frame which attaches to a spring which is underneath and that puts tension on the breakaway roller. If you can go to the case ih parts site and type in 1300 mower it shows all the breakdown parts look at parts No.1234 that's it.
