Farmall H Rear Axle Seal

it"s leaking pretty bad and I need to replace it. What"s the part number(s) I need and what"s the proper way to get it. I"m guessing puling the rear wheel off the axle and just swapping it similar to
PTO shaft seal?

Helps not nick the seal if you slide it in on a sheet of tin. Clean up the axle a lot. You should be able to look the seal up online. You could get it about anywhere (NAPA, a bearing store, dealer)

(quoted from post at 10:49:30 05/28/13) Similar to sflem849 I have used a sheet of paper to avoid nicking the seal while sliding it into place.

I actually greased the snot out of my axle, but wish I would have used tin or paper. I heard about that trick about one week too late.

There really aren't any suprises in there. Don't pull the bull pinion carrier without removing the bull pinion gears. Other than that it is simple. You won't need to pull them, but I thought I would bring it up incase you start replacing a lot of stuff in there. Also, check the axles for play. If a bearing is going out it will cause an axle seal to leak.

Locate a plastic drinking cup (red solo cup??)and trim to fit around the axle.
Use a flat mill file to remove any nicks from the axle, then use some emery cloth or coated abrasive (sandpaper) to remove any rust, etc. Grease the axle, slide the plastic and new seal together into place.
Carefully remove the plastic.

Well said. The only thing I would say is that the bull pinion gear can
be left in when pulling the carrier but the bull gear (the big one)
does have to be removed first.

Thanks for the correction, I typed faster than I could think. Those big giant ones, not the little ones.

Chad I just replaced mine and the part number is.

National seal 415001

You can get them at any parts house. I got mine at Oreilly's.

I haven't dug into it yet, but if if the bearing is
bad, can that be replaced without pulling the axle?
What's the bearing part number - any idea of cost?

You can replace the outside bearing without pulling the axle. If you gotta ask, you can't afford it. lol Sadly that is the case with the axle bearings. When I bought mine 3 years ago they were around $110 each.
