Best Baler Tractor Ever?

Baled oats today with new to me Farmall 460. After growing up on a Regular, later using a loader on an M with wide front but no power steering, today baling with a Farmall 460 Row Crop was great! Power steering, TA, good brakes, a nice purring 6 cyl, hydraulic adjust hitch -- what could be any better? Well, truth be told, climbing on and off is a pain for an old codger like me, but . . . Almost in Heaven today!

I've bailed more hay in my life than you could ever dream of, The Best tractor for bailing is a David Brown, The slow gear selection is unbelievable. It has a lever by the seat to change the pto speed from 540 to 1000, We would put four windrows together, put the pto in 1000 and idle the motor down and put it in creeper gear. One trip down and back and its time for the next wagon.

Never used one myself, but I hear some of those vintage International Hydros are even better on the baler than that 460.

What brand & model baler do you have? I 'tink' folks would like to know, ya know. Me, I'm the second owner of a '63 Farmall 460 and recently acquired an IH model 46 baler for my ~.9 acres. I want to use it somewhere...maybe let the lawn go; trouble is, I don't have a mower nor a rake. Me 'tinks' I would like a vintage IH balance head, just 'cause they look cool and can mow up and down banks. I'm glad you like your Farmall 460! Any pictures to share?!!

We pulled a pto driven NH 66 with a Farmall BN. It was our best baler tractor ever. Used it for 15 years befor ewe got an M.

IH 666 with NH 271 baler. For our operation, it was the perfect pair. Well, it was the only baler and the 666 sure beat the H on the baler. It had a cab, radio, on top of the transmission with TA-that's the rest of the story.

My grandpa swore the best baler tractor ever was our IH 656 Hydro. We had a New Holland baler behind it that would really make the tractor bog down if you got her into a big windrow or some wet hay.

Before we got rid of the baler we did use the 7120 with it. The 18 speed trans gave you the perfect speed. Plus it kept him out of the sun and heat. Not good on old farmers with sun spots and breathing problems.

I use an 8920 and 2756 5x6 round baler or 3x4 Hesston. Great combo's, we even pulled our 4910 4x4 with it before we learned we could make more money on 3x4s.

I'd love to try a 1066 hydro on the round baler though!

I have an ancient John Deere 214 wire/string pto baler, that I'm fixin' to use soon. Up to now I've been borrowing my neighbor/buddy's old New Holland wire tie with a Wisconsin engine or pto drive. I mow the hay with horses using an old 5' McCormick-Deering #9 horse-drawn mower, then use a John Deere side delivery rake behind the Farmall H and then bale. It was my first time to use the 460--alot better (more power, heavier, power-steering, etc) than the H. I like making hay (until time to pick up the bales). No Pix -- to dumb to get 'em to post!
