When we got our M in the early 60s we ran SAE 10 temps. below 0 degrees and SAE 20 32 degrees down to 0 degrees and SAE 30 for temps above 32 degrees. In the mid 60s we went to 15-40 Shell Rotela year round and used that until I sold it a year ago.

Clean oil, changed regularly is the most important part. SAE 30, 10w-30w, 15w-40w all are fine. Brand of your choice. If you are going to work the old girl, used the ZDDP additive from Rislone. If it is an occasional user or show queen, don't worry too much.

Here in Canada wallyworld has the big pails of shell 15/40 on sale for about 50. Thats a good deal up here and will change a couple of tractors. kent

Thanks Jed, but it is just the plain truth. I can appreciate people having a favorite brand. I can appreciate people having their viscosity of choice. But I would venture a guess, that an engine that had regular oil and filter changes when appropriate using K-mart brand oil, will outlast an engine using a high end name brand, but changed infrequently.

go figure. Clean oil, fuel, and air makes these girls happy, and you will be rewarded with years/hours of service. It ain't too complicated.......
