1086 brakes?

The left side of my fathers 1086 locked up in the field pulling a 20" disc. Backed the tractor up and it freed up and continued on, no unusual noise. Went to travel on the road to another field and it locked again, sliding the left side to a stop, again reversed the tractor and limped to the field. We don"t want to use the tractor till we find out what is causing this lock up situation. I jacked the tractor up and spun the left side wheels, it sounds fine with no grinding or bumping noted. I"m assuming the hydraulics that apply the brakes are the problem, Anyone else experience this or ever hear of such a problem? Any advice as to repairs or what to check will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You think it might be dangerous on the road? I'll be sure to share that with my 77 year old father he will probably laugh since it scared the crap out of him during this recent episode. Thanks for advising me also to look into the problem since I thought that was what I doing by posting here. Last but not least would you can explain to me exactly how a spider gear can be "galled", I have the tractor jacked up on the in question side with the tractor out of park, the axle rotates freely in either direction. As I stated in the post I will be grateful for any help , but your post was absolutely "no" help. Sorry for the vent.

he goes it been some time scene i work on a 1086 brake but first check see if that brake could be dropping down applying pressure to the brake it could be a simple as the return spring is broken, also if the brake valve on fire wall is going bad like leaking by also applying pressure. that could be the problem then check make sure that it is getting proper lube the line that supply the fluid to brake valve also goes to the brake drum to lube it. if i was checking it i have tractor running check see if you have a good flow of fluid on lube side then see if you get fluid on pressure line i believe the lube line is one going into center of brake housing pressure line is one on top of housing you could loosen the bleed valve to see if you are getting pressure build up form a bad. this part brake down can be found at,, official case online parts store,,

The first thing I would do it remove the drain plug in the left axle housing to see if there are any filings or pieces loose in there.

did the problem occur when the brakes were applied or on it's own,if it were a hyd control problem the brakes should remain locked even if backed up, did you by chance try to move forward after pressing the clutch or moved the brake pedal before trying reverse, reason i asked was i've encountered a couple of problems with brake systems on different pieces of equipment that weren't normal, most of the time the problem would be something simple even though it caused severe problems, on yours there is a mcv hyd system highly unlikely that caused the problem just trying to possibly eliminate a cause, i'd pull the brakes and check them, but from the way you describe the sudden lockup sounds like something is locking up the bull gear and pinion on the drive axle broken tooth or bearing roller ect, sorry for the long opinion as to what the cause could be i hope it's something simple

Ditto. High probability of a mechanical failure.

Ok a update, I got both wheels off of the left side of the tractor. Turning the axle with a pipe wrench there is a lot of gear noise and roughness felt through the wrench. If anyone out there would discuss on the phone removal procedure I would be very grateful. I steamed cleaned the tractor today getting ready to remove the axle and tube. I"m sure I have any tool needed to do the job but do have a procedure to follow. Please email me with a phone # and a good time to call for some instructions if you will. Thanks Steve [email protected]

OK We found the problem. the outer bearing on the bull gear drive shaft failed. It took out the bull gear drive sprocket, my dad wants to reuse the bull gear, I'm not sure that is a good idea, it took some pretty good hits itself. I know it needs 3 bearings and a brake disc kit.
