H carb kits

I've got a neighbor that has a 52 H 12Volt that's runs great as long as he gives it a little choke...will fall on it's face when choke is pushed in. I don't know squat about these tractors but,I've worked on several Ford N tractors so he asked me to give it a look. Good blue spark to all plugs, plenty of fuel from tank to carb, air filter clean, battery fully charged, timing must be on because it purrs like a kitten a long as the choke is out a little...sounds like a carb issue to me...what do you guys think. If it is the carb is the basic carb kit usually all that is needed. It is a 50981dc carb and I can't find comprehensive kit on this site for it...Thanks for the help Dan

Sounds like a leak on the intake manifold to me. I'd check over the manifold for holes or a lose carb or maybe a leaky manifold gasket before I would buy any parts.

Others will disagree, but that's ok. I buy my carb kits from CaseIH, some of the others are pretty junky. Other than that did you try opening the main jet a quarter to a half turn? The carb mixture is lean.

CNKS...haven't messed with the carb yet, will have to do some homework see which needle is which, but I will try that first. Thanks

Charlie...will the old spraying of the ether trick work on these tractors when checking for a vacuum leak?

I"ll post my carb tuning procedure, it may help;
Make sure the float isn’t sticking or touching the insides of the float chamber. Some previous advice was to use a Dremel tool and smooth the insides of the float chamber so it doesn’t rub or touch. Pretty important. Set the float so the top of it rests 1 27/32" above the flat surface of the float chamber.
Initial settings are as follows to get it started;
Main fuel adjusting screw, big screw facing down at an angle, towards the rear, at the bottom of the carb; 2 1/2 to 3 turns open. This main screw turns clock-wise for leaner mixture.
Idle fuel-mixture screw, smaller screw facing forwards, on upper left-hand side of carb; 1 to 1 1/2 turns open. This idle screw turns counter-clockwise for leaner.
Idle speed screw, faces outboard, at the top of the carb; set for 450 rpm, and make sure the governor correctly engages the slot.
Final settings are determined as follows;
Get the engine warmed up, and idling.
Turn OUT the idle fuel-mixture screw until rough running, then turn in until it idles smooth. (Mine is set at 1 turn open.)
Rev it up, wide open, warmed up, then turn the main fuel adjusting screw IN until rough, then out til smooth, then 1/4 turn to 1/2 turn further out. (Mine sits at 1 turn open. Other advice has been to set it at 2 1/2 turns open for pulling implements.)
Should rev up smoothly and evenly.
Too Lean = stumble, sputter, damaged melted plugs.
Correct = tan plugs.
Too Rich = back smoke, black sooty plugs.

fbh44...thanks, that's great info, only one question, is the float set with or without a gasket. Thanks Dan

Dan - It"s been a few years, but as I remember, I was at the kitchen table, had the thing upside down, and set mine without the gasket in place. I also seem to remember I just assembled it, it did not need to have the tab bent, it was the correct height to begin with. I suppose that way"s correct.

Did you remove the fuel inlet fitting? There is a very fine mesh filter screen attached to that fitting. If it is dirty and clogged, it will cause the problems you describe. That screen can easily be cleaned with some aerosol carb cleaner and compressed air. I seriously doubt you will need a complete kit. A new gasket, possibly a float valve and seat, and adjusting the float should change the attitude of that H.

You really do not need to be concerned with the carb number or model. The pieces you will need are the exact same for all of H carburetors.

If you can work on a Ford, You can work on a Farmall.

Rusty...no I haven't removed anything yet but, I will. If that don't do it, I'll get the parts described, give it a good soaking and poking and maybe fix what ails it. Thanks for the help...Dan
