H oilpan petcock

How hard is it to replace the upper petcock on my 1947 Farmall H oilpan. The handle is broken off. Does it just thread into the oilpan?

Your petcock probably has pipe threads either 1/8 or 1/4 NPT. It can be removed easily by turning the broken petcock CCW. The oil pan probably has a female pipe fitting and your broken petcock is threaded into that. Should be easy to change. Hal
PS: 1/8 pipe is .405" in diameter and 1/4 pipe is .540".

I put a dip-stick in my "H", I drilled a hole in the boss sticking out of the block above this area, carefully drilled a 1/8" hole for an inch, then a 3/16" for a while, then back to a 1/8" further down, and actually did not break off a bit. Had to drill through about 2 3/4" of cast iron. Put in a threaded nipple, and a Ford dipstick. Works great. If you do ths, pull the oil pan, to see where you"re drilling, becuase your dipstick will miss the crank by maybe 3/4". You"ll need to clean all the shavings out too.

I made a new handle for my H and wire welded it on, also wire welded a broken off one for the neighbor on his H. chris

Previous experience indicates that you should drain the oil first, maybe even remove the pan from the tractor, and then use a torch to heat the area around the petcock, let it cool, and then use the pipe wrench. That petcock has been in there for a L-O-N-G time. It will not come out easily.
