am rebuilding an M and found that i am out of adjustment on the brakes, the lineings look near new, could the drums be wore that much or should i look else where ???? i have tried turning the cams over and didn't help so that's not it....

After 70 years the drums are likely worn quite a bit. Measure the diameter & compare with new specs. Service manual should have a measurement for you.

Hi Jim,

Are you real sure you have that band threaded right? Even with no lining, it should grab 'er.

Bottom to the inside?

Maybe I shouldn"t speak here, and I really don"t know, but if it"s like an "H" the first thing is to loosen the lock-nut on the bottom positioning screw, turn the screw up til the band contacts the drum, then loosen it a half-turn or so, and tigthten the locknut. THEN the band is positioned to be tigthtened.
Other thing is that the drum might have been so worn and scored [like mine is] that somebody turned it down, and removed 1/8" or 1/4" metal, and you might not be able to tighten it.

When I have ran into this same type of problem I have discovered that the pins that hold the brake band to the cam were wore down in size. I took a piece of round stock and cut new pins, It fixed the problem of running out of adjustment more than once for me. If you do not have any round stock you can use a bolt, cut the head and also the threads off. Let me know it that fixes your problem. Charlie
