856 losing prim

I bush hogged all afternoon went out the next morning to finish
up and it would not start. I replaced the rubber grommet on the
return line & the o-ring on the line coming from the filters. Got
it running and let it run about 30 mins & shut it off. Waited
about 15 mins & I started back up fine. The next afternoon it
would not start again. It's getting air somewhere or the pumps
getting weak. Somebody please give me an idea!!!

Check your return line check valve that's on top of the pump to see if theirs crude in it.If so they don't like to start if the governor ring is flaking off and plugging it.

There's a check valve somewhere in that system that gets sticky. I don't know off the top of my head exactly where it is but I know Dad's 856 acted like it was losing prime, and often needed a puff of starting fluid to fire, unless you felt like cranking on it for 2-3 minutes.

He fiddled with that check valve, and the tractor would fire right off with no starting fluid in any temperature.
