6 and 12 V generator

Just started a project and trying to make a 53 H out of two tractors. One of the tractors was 6 v and the other one was 12 v. The good one is going to be 12v. The generator on the 12 v tractor needs quite a bit of repair, but the one on the tractor with 6v passed the motor test, but i was using a 12 v source. What parts get changed or altered to make the generator 12 v or is there even anything to change. Any help would be great. Thanks

Basically a genny dont necessarily know its output, its increased simply by turning it faster and/or pumping more current through tis field windings. The armature is more of a current rated device then any voltage sensitive device. I have made 6 volt gennys charge at 12 volts simply by using a 12 volt Voltage Regulator NOW DONT ANYONE HAVE A CALF IM NOTTTTTTTT SAYING THATS ENGINEERING CORRECT OR RECOMMENDING IT BUT ONLYYYYYYYYYY THAT IT CAN WORK mine worked and never overheated the fields or at least never gave no indication of such

That all being said if a shop were to convert a 6 volt genny for 12 volt use, they could change out the fields to insure they can handle the current that may be necessary for 12 volt charging. Also some 6 volt Ive seen had smaller commutator spacings

HOWEVER a genny designed for 6 volt use will have different specs and current ratings then one for 12 so Id USE THE RIGHT ONE

SOOOOOOOO TO CONVERT YOU NEED AT LEAST A 12 VOLT VOLTAGE REGULATOR (well DUH) and a 12 volt genny is best although a shop could convert one or you could try what I did (it may likely NOT charge at any super high rate)

PS A genny needs to pass BOTH motor tests not just the first one

Thanks for the reply John T. I will probably just use the 12V regulator and Genny. I did some cleaning and shining on both of the generators and I can get them both to motor, but only the 12v one will speed up when the ground is taken off the field. The 12v still needs three new brushes and the wire is a little hairy but seems to still work. nothing is grounded out. that will probably be the one i end up using. teddy52food, so i guess all i really need right now for the genny is the three new brushes.
