More farmall 504 gas questions

As you guys know I picked up a farmall 504 on Monday. I"ve been trying to run it a good bit to see what needs fixed and what not. First off the tractor smokes. Not all the time. Not at idle and not at full throttle. It mostly does it on startup and when you rev up the engine. I plowed with it today and it has plenty of power (easily lifts the front end up) and it has low hours. I"m thinking oil has to be coming through the valves. I was told I should try valve seals. So what i"m wondering is what part # am I looking for and where should I get some? The NAPA in town is pathetic when it comes to finding anything... Is there anything else I should check with the smoke? SECOND: are there supposed two levers for the 3pt hitch? It has two slots and I only have the position lever. THIRD: when it"s on an incline, with the clutch and brakes in, it won"t come out of gear until I pull the TA back to release it! Is this normal or does the TA need adjusted!? Sorry, that was long. Thanks for any help!

I have an International 504 utility with the gas engine. Difficulty getting the tractor out of gear with the TA engaged means that the TA and clutch linkage are out of adjustment. If you adjust it according to the owner's manual then the problem should be solved. My 504 was built in 1964 and has been in my family since new. The TA is original and has never been repaired--always adjusted it as per the owner's manual.

I just re-read your question about the TA. Yes, even if you have to pull the TA handle back (when it is already back) to get the tractor out of gear then the TA and clutch linkage need adjustment. If I remember correctly, there is a short rod on the left side of the tractor with a slotted clevis on one end--it needs to be shortened slightly. Maybe 1/2 to 1 full turn.

I'm still waiting for my manuals to get here and I am sure the main clutch needs adjusted because it grinds a little going into gear. I just don't have the specs yet. I'll look at the TA adjustment too. Also It's starting to smoke less! It may have been a stuck ring or too. It had sat for three years prior to my purchase. I need to hook it to something and work the snot out of it...

There is a process I have found to work well if there is no satisfaction on the TA.

This works: I adjust a worn set of linkages so that the pedal releases the shifter when pushed down 1/2 the distance to the full pedal travel from the place where the main clutch begins to move the tractor. Set the master clutch freeplay, (1.25 inches from the platform measured at the point where the pedal arm touches the platform. Next, tape a wooden 12" ruler next to the clutch arm so it sticks out forward past the pedal about 6 inches. With clear space ahead of the tractor, put it in first direct, and let out the clutch slowly. as you begin to move note the location of the beginning of tractor movement on the ruler (the number doesn't matter, it only allows you to know where the clutch starts to move the tractor.)
Stop the tractor, and mark that spot on the ruler.
with it shut off, and looking at the ruler, note how far it is from that mark, to fully pushed pedal. Set the TA clutch so it releases at 1/2 that distance. this setting allows the pedal push to release both clutches when pushed (correctly) to its travel stop. and assures that the TA clutch is fully engaged before the master clutch begins to move the power into the gears. That tractor has (or should have) Hytran or equivalent fluid in the transmission/rear end. That stuff is thin and does not stop rotating gears as quickly as older tractors that had 90 weight in the transmission. That may be the cause of your gear clash.

Try this, Push in the clutch, count to 5, then shift into gear. HTH.

Sounds like someone broke the draft control lever off of your 3pt hitch controls. It probably seized up from lack of use and someone broke it off trying to get it moving again.

Don't panic and go throwing a lot of $$$ at the engine until you've run it a while. Heck, even if it does still smoke a little you can run it a LONG time like that with no problems.

As long as it has oil pressure, doesn't use a lot of oil, and you can see where you're going, run it.
