I just re-read your question about the TA. Yes, even if you have to pull the TA handle back (when it is already back) to get the tractor out of gear then the TA and clutch linkage need adjustment. If I remember correctly, there is a short rod on the left side of the tractor with a slotted clevis on one end--it needs to be shortened slightly. Maybe 1/2 to 1 full turn.

I'm still waiting for my manuals to get here and I am sure the main clutch needs adjusted because it grinds a little going into gear. I just don't have the specs yet. I'll look at the TA adjustment too. Also It's starting to smoke less! It may have been a stuck ring or too. It had sat for three years prior to my purchase. I need to hook it to something and work the snot out of it...

That tractor has (or should have) Hytran or equivalent fluid in the transmission/rear end. That stuff is thin and does not stop rotating gears as quickly as older tractors that had 90 weight in the transmission. That may be the cause of your gear clash.
Try this, Push in the clutch, count to 5, then shift into gear. HTH.
