i just recently got my 1st project tractor so i"m pretty new to the classic tractor world. i have a Farmall H. the tank is in terrible condition. on top of the rust it also has some sort of a rubber coating in it too. could someone please help me out with what to do to clean it out.

Take it to a good radiator shop. They can boil it then seal it. It is not all that expensive.

Radiator shops can clean and seal rusty tanks, but if yours is in really bad shape you might want to consider looking for a good used tank. With that rubber coating you might have a devil of a time getting it all out. There are a zillion H"s out there, many of them salvage. A good used tank shouldn"t be too hard to find. If you get a used tank I would still have it boiled and sealed. Then you are done with it for good.

never thought about takin it to a radiator shop. but i might end up buyin a tank instead. Zachary, where are you located at?

I had the same issue with the original fuel tank on my Farmall 240 which I am restoring. I was advised after talking to several folks at the RPRU a couple of years ago to just find a different tank as a poor or improperly sealed tank will be next to impossible to clean. It was flaking off in small pieces and looked like crushed leaves and was piling up on the bottom of the tank. I obtained a different salvage tank and had a Red Kote seal kit installed by a radiator shop who has done lots of them and it looks very good. I haven't gotten the tractor totally reassembled and running yet but am not anticipating any issues with the sealed tank. The total price for the cleaning, seal kit, expended chemicals, labor and a cost of grey epoxy primer applied to the exterior was $120.

Those tanks are made of galvanized steel. Once you get it clean, there is no need for Red-Kote or any other brand of tank liner. If the radiator shop can't get the crud and current tank liner out, several of us know of a product that WILL leave that tank clean and shiny.

what is it that will work? very rarely do i have
time to take it somewhere for someone to work on
while they are open. we all know how workin on a
farm is. and i'm all about doin what i can myself. i
heard that good drain opener works as long as all
the rust is out of the tank when re-installed
because any rust left over will hold the drain
opener and i'm sure that would be murder on the
engine.
