oil in water after rebuild

So 2 years ago our IH 584 got water in the oil so we decided to do a complete rebuild with the engine. 2 Years later, we completely rebuilt the engine with a master rebuild kit for the block and head from Red Power. When we put the engine together, we torqued everything down and waited over night and re-torqued everything. Then when the engine was together, we filled the radiator with water, the oil pan with fresh oil, rolled the engine over to circulate the oil and let it sit over night. The next day, we hooked up the injectors and nothing was in the oil so we got it to start. We ran the tractor in the garage for a few minutes on idle and let it sit over night. The day after we started it up to move the tractor to the front of the garage to fix a tire, checked the oil and there is water in it. Any suggestions?

well hard to say without really knowing all the details. like was the head magnafluxed and block checked out. but i have never heard of waiting overnight to retorque a head. put the engine together then start up and run to operating temp for an hr. or so then retorque while warm and reset valves.
i have also seen head gaskets put on dry leak to the outside and then once started and up to temp the leak is sealed. if leaking on out side it just as well could be leaking inside. have you looked in rad when tractor was running? also may need to pull the pan an watch for the leak. i never add the coolant till i am ready to start an engine after o/h.

Pull the oil pan and beg, borrow or rent/buy a cooling/radiator cap system pressure tester. Pressurize the system and look to see where the water is coming from. It may be a bad oring, cracked head, cracked block, even a bad oil cooler(if it has one) Happy hunting.

Look in the radiator while the engine is running for bubbles. You may have a cracked head. Hal

Pressure testing the cooling system is the way to find where it's leaking. You will need to remove the oil pan, valve cover and side covers so you can see where the leak is coming from. You said that you have water in the cooling system, you may want to add some antifreeze to color the coolant, makes it easier to spot leaks. If I remember correctly, there are expansion plugs under the rocker arms on top of the cylinder head, I have seen them leak.

Retorquing the cylinder head after sitting overnight is recommend by John Deere on some of their engines. I have tested this procedure and it does work. Sure makes it much easier to retorque some bolts that are tough to get to with the rocker arm shaft is in place.
Happy hunting..

Not to be lazy, but some Irontite may correct the issue.

I would pull the pan and see where it is leaking, then make a decision.

Did you notice different o-ring numbers for sleeves according to serial numbers of engine. That sounds like the most likely problem. They are color coded.

We replaced the sleeves, O-rings, pistons, rings, bearings, valves, springs, and new gaskets. I think we also replaced the injector sleeves.

We put a jug of antifreeze in first, then filled the rest with water. I got a radiator pressure test kit at harbor freight today but it has the wrong size. Also, the water pump was leaking onto the front of the engine, is there a way it could be leaking back through into the oil?

I don't think it could be a cracked head because bubbles in the radiator would be cylinder pressure going into the cooling system, not water/antifreeze going into the oil.

(quoted from post at 15:12:11 05/04/13) I don't think it could be a cracked head because bubbles in the radiator would be cylinder pressure going into the cooling system, not water/antifreeze going into the oil.

It can go the other way when the engine is shut off though.

I don't have the information on which block takes what color o-ring but I thought they included that with the sleeve set. Maybe not.

pressure test with pan, valve cover and any other cover removed that will help to see a leak, years ago man i worked with rebuilt a 6 cylinder ford diesel in a truck i was mounting pole racks on,we had ran it at different times while adding the racks and other items checked the oil each time, went to move it to paint it pull the dip stick it was 2 gallons over full antifreeze on the stick, pressure test found a liner leaking upon removal found the o-rings one rolled one cut, that particular sleeve didn't have the end tapered as much as the others, the rings and liner were lubed good upon assembly
