Water Jacket Cover

I replacing my water jacket cover on my 450.Do yall put anything on tht treads on the retaining bolts?
It has only lock washers under the nuts,is this
normal or should it have brass washers?

Lock washers and a new gasket. Don't tighten too much or it will leak. I'm currently trying to straighten the one on my Super M, same as your 450, I may have to buy a new one. Previous owner bent it pretty good.

450 should have come with flat washers on the bolts. Although they are close to the same size as a lock washer. Sized between lock and a SAE flat if I remember correct.
Never liked to use silicon much. But found it seals the covers better than a gasket with sealer for me. Just a small bead without a gasket seems to work without problems. Use brake cleaner for last cleaning before use. But I do let it set for 48 hours before putting coolant in.

I second CNKS's advice, do not over tighten those bolts, it WILL bend the cover, I did it and I now have the pleasure of replacing it. Put a good amount of sealer on the gasket, tighen it to "Snug" let it sit for a while, give it another half turn and let it sit for a couple days before putting coolent back in. That was advice I was given, good luck. ~Anthony

I bought an aftermarket cover for my H, it was so thin that it would not seal with a gasket. The lower bolts also went into water jacket, so they needed sealer.

David--Who did you buy it from, today I ordered one from Steiner, if that is the same as yours I probably will return it and see if I can straighten my old one some more. I didn't check with CaseIH, probably should have. I did replace the one on my Super H about 10 years ago, it was and still is ok, but I don't remember the source. Steiner also lists the wrong gasket for the water jacket, it has the same number as the valve tappet cover on the other side, I have both off they are not the same, the IH number they list is not correct either.

I either got it from here or Steiner. There were two issues, first the hole size was a little small and there were indents where they punched it. The other was that it is so thin it would not hold between the bolts.

I ended up drilling the holes out, then cleaning up with grinder to make it flat and using RTV. I changed it because of advise that my old one was shot, but probably should have inspected it and re-used.

Make sure and power wash out between cylinders while cover is off. Do this until you cannot see any more gunk and the drain runs clear.

Always wondered how Steiners could sell those things for that price. I used to buy the covers from A&I. Dealer cost was nearly twice Steiners retail price, and now I know why. The covers from A&I are as heavy built as the originals and the fit is the same also.

The block has been completely disassembled and cleaned, but from what you said, looks like the plate is going back.
