Clean Fastners?

I just got some new plain steel bolts to replace worn out ones on my cultivator. They have a coating of oil I believe. How can I clean this off before painting? I though mineral spirits should work. Kerosene will leave oil residue right?

Thanks

Mineral spirits will clean off the oil but may leave a film.I would use any brake cleaner that
comes in a spray can as the last step before
painting. One added benefit to spray cleaner is
that it's a great bug killer.Luck,JimAnderson

I do have acetone (not a lot). Didn't think of the brake cleaner! Thanks Wayne & Jim.

Gas, or carb cleaner or brake cleaner or paint thinner any or all will work just fine. If your going to paint it then you probably have paint reducer on hand any how so use that to do the cleaning

Starter fluid works great. Cheaper than brake cleaner, leaves NO residue and dries almost instantly. I use it all the time for cleaning small parts or to remove grease or oil from something I'm about to paint.

If the fasteners are plated the paint will not stick well. If looks are important you might consider a self-etching primer (available in spray cans at better auto parts stores) or soaking them them in Jasco Prep & Prime (I found it at Lowes Home Center) and then rinsing.

Thanks for the advice guys. I ended up soaking in old paint thinner I found tucked away in the shop. Then soaked in dish soap/water with agitation. Blew dry with compressed air.

Almost got the cultivator all together. Need to adjust the trips and I'm ready to accidentally cultivate out my corn rows.
