i have a 1948 c with a 6volt system. it keeps draining the battery, might i have the battery connected wrong? isnt positive connection really the ground or have ie been misled

Positive ground is correct. There may be a problem with the voltage regulator, or possibly the light switch. It is also highly probable that the battery itself is defective and simply will not hold a charge.
 
Pull one of the battery cables off and hook a test light between the battery and the cable. If it lights up with the switch off you have a short some place. Leave it hooked up and remove one wire at a time form different places and watch the light. When you remove one and the light goes out you found your short and then you know what you need to fix or replace
