I just spoke with my local case mechanic who had just finished rebuilding the carberator on my 1950 H. The #3 cylinder will not fire. there is good spark and a compression check showed 85lbs across all four cylinders with no leak off. He stated that it appears the valves are not stuck, but he did not open it up. Trying to eliminate any easy fixes before resorting to opening it up. Any suggestions would be geatly appreciated.

We had an H with exactly the same problem. Found out it was a bad manifold gasket, just like John in Iowa says. Start the tractor, spray some carb cleaner under the intake manifold at the gasket. You might hear it start to run perfectly. That's what happened to us. A new gasket solved the problem.

How about checking you rotor cap to see if the post on #3 is missing. As George says, swap the plug on #3, but also the wire...they can be bad. Possible too much play in the distributor missing the post on #3??? Just a couple of other remote possibilities.

I had that problem, turned out to be the wire. Looked like a good spark when you had it out, but wasn't firing under compression.

Is the spark plug wet with gas or oil? Remove the valve cover and check for a bent push rod or a lifter that has come off the push rod.

If you have good spark and compressation. I would look to see if you have a intake manofold leak. Try running it and shoot some oil around #3 intake and listen for air shucking the oil in. If you just overhaul it, you should have had the manofold planed. It saves a lot of trouble down the road.

Swap #3 plug with any other to see if the mis-fireing cylinder moves. That will confirm or rule out a plug problem.
