Farmall Cub generator

Im restoring a cub tractor with the magneto, but the generator I have came off a newer cub with voltage regulator. Can I use this generator? Will it work?

Charles - The newer generator will work fine. For best performance and longest battery life, be sure to use the matching voltage regulator from the newer Cub.

OK thanks, but i"m under the impression that the older cub, the one that has the magneto, doesn"t use a voltage regulator. Is that right?

Correct, it uses a cutout relay that looks just like a voltage regulator, but is not. Those cubs ordered with no lights had a cutout that used a built in fixed resistor in the cutout to make a steady low charge rate. (a field terminal on the cutout was connected to the F terminal on the gen. Jim

On the older ones with a cutout, it was a 3 brush generator and adjustable brush controlled the maximum output, and the light switch controlled the high low charge. A later generator does not have the adjustable brush, and it needs to have a regulator, not a cutout.

Is their a way to know if I have the adjustable
brushes in the generator? I do know the generator I
have came off of a tractor with a regulator. So, can
I assume i'll need a regulator for the re-
installation?

Adjustable brushes can be seen as having a curved slot and mount bolt holding the third brush. (the one not 180 degrees from the other brushes.) Some third brush generators have fixed third brushes, no adjustment slot) Locating an adjustable brush as close to the fixed brush as possible will provide maximum output (which is good if a regulator is used as the regulator will control output correctly.
