Reworking a m head for a super m

I picked up a 53 super m that is in need of a new head. Locally all I can find are m heads. Can I rework the m to super m specs? I've been finding that bates and the like offer the same head from the m thru 450. But when I look into the parts break down of the m vrs sm I find the valves to be different caseih numbers.

If I use the m head, any performance loss?

I have no proof, but I was once told by an old IH
mechanic that a SM head had bigger valves than an
M.They will bolt up,but your SM may have less than
normal power.

What head number do you have,8060 or 8574?? They interchange. Both of these are Gas heads,if you have shorter valves, they were used on kerosene heads.

M and SM gasoline heads use the same valve numbers. Maybe a small power loss with some M gasoline heads compared to a super. Probably couldn't feel it on most tractors. Really need to know the head number removed and the one being installed. Late M and SM tractors used gasoline heads 8060 DC or 8574 DB. Lower suffix letters came on most M tractors. But lots of heads were replaced over the years. So you can find 8060 DC and 8574 DB on some M tractors now. Can also find 8060 DD and 8574 DC the replacement for previous heads on M and SM tractors.
My be just my luck that I seem to find less 8574 DC heads cracked than the others.
There was also a newer replacement head number that shows up rarely.
You could also use 400 and 450 heads if wanted or found.

dont spend alot on a 8060/8574, or even a 400-450 gas head. go over to the left n look up the reproduction 450LP cyl head. nice power gain, no underlaying cracks awaiting, or welded or pinned,,, lol.

I pulledt the valve covers on the m engines and found an 8060 DB and 8060 DC. It looked like the DC head was hit with grinder over the 8060 casting mark. Any idea why it would be like this?

I'm guessing the DC head would be the better of the two?

I have a rebuilt SM head #8574-DC ready to bolt on. Send me a e-mail with your phone # and I will get back to you. E-mail is open. Dave
