Farmall H Constant Mesh Gear

Here's the question: I bought one of those new constant mesh
gears for my H, since I was already tearing into the tranny, and it
was looking like it could use replacement. The new one, is one of
those typical "new" but no way OEM designed parts. The shoulders
on the new gear are shorter than the original, and they included a
spacer. I figured that the spacker must go between the gears to
position the C.M. gear correctly with the shoulders being shorter
and all... well, I try to reinstall the shaft and all, and it won't fit back
into the case. I want to see if anyone out there knows where the
spacer is supposed to go. Does it go in between the constant mesh
gear and the other gears, or does it go infront of the C.M. gear and
the behind the front bearing?

The use of shims/spacers and the like to reposition a gear on a shaft is OK but an indication that the manufacturer was sloppy, even to the point of putting a spacer in the "kit" that doesn't work.
I cannot imagine putting spacers in the input shaft and still having it function. Using shims to align the new gear is probably necessary. My take is that it will take some time to get it right, as it may take a shim on both sides of the new CM gear. Jim

I put in a new after market input shaft and the matching lower constant mesh gear in one of my H farmall's a few years ago. It fit fine but the teeth were narrower and just didn't look like I would want to pull the old two bottom plow very long with it. I now wish I had tried much harder to find a good used constant mesh gear. Hindsight of course. I did find a couple of good used gears that new was not available and am glad I did.
