Torque Amplifier

I posted a question the other day about the plate on the bottom of the TA case leaking. This is the plate that has the cultivator attachment and the seasonal shut off for the live power. Please correct me if I am wrong--- The owners manual calls for SAE 80 wt, so is this a separate reservoir just for the TA?? Next question, What is involved in stopping this leak? If I drain the case and remove this plate will it be a simple fix? Will gobs of parts fall loose and it take three mechanics and a lot of cussing to get it all back together again? Where might I be able to get an exploded view of the TA? Thanks, Ellis

Well first of all what tractor are we talking about? In the 656 or the 400 and 450 there is no oil in the ta case its dry. The hydrolic resevoir has hytran oil in it .

Not recalling what tractor you have I can only say what I have found on my 300 row crop. That plate can be unbolted and removed ande you can make a new gasket out of some gasket paper from the hardware store. I used a hole punch to make the bolt holes in my gasket and scissors to cut it out. The seasonal disconnect is the only difficult part and all you have to do is to make sure that the knob on the inside arm of the disconnect lever goes back in the groove in the collar. If you don't want to use the seasonal disconnect you can buy a split collar from Surplus Center and lock the two disconnect collars together. The TA needs hytran as 80 wt is not sufficient to keep it lubricated. The TA is a common reservoir with the transmission and rear end.

Yes the original manuals say heavy oil in the transmission. IH changed that and at sell out time wanted hytran in them.
When the transmission oil is at the correct level it will flow from the back of the transmission to the front wall of the center housing when equipped with a t/a. But in the center housing above the lower level is a dry area for the t/a clutch.
Yes you will loose oil when the seasonal disconnect bracket is removed. Going to be some trapped there even if all 3 drain plugs for the transmission and center housing are removed.
Only 3 places the disconnect or bracket can leak. Gasket, oring for the disconnect operating shaft or a seal ring where the operating shaft sleeve goes in the seasonal disconnect plate or bracket. Has a nut on the bottom side holding it in place. Nothing will fall out (unless broke parts) when the plate comes off. Just make sure when reinstalling that the shift lever that goes in the sliding dog goes in the groove.
Now if I was a betting person. That dry compartment for the t/a clutch that I mentioned above. It has 2 drain holes in case oil leaks into it. When a cultivator bracket is use those holes will drain on the bracket and make it look like its leaking. Make sure that"s not where the oil is leaking from before draining transmission oil and putting some back.
If leaking out the holes, 3 seals keep that dry and unless the front wall t/a compartment seal is the only leak the center housing and t/a removal is needed.
Post above mentions how to find pictures on the case IH site.
