Starter for 1947 Farmall H

(quoted from post at 11:08:23 04/09/13) Can anyone help me locate a parts store that handles the 6 volt starter for my 1947 H?

An original starter will perform better than a new replacement; take it to an automotive electrical rebuild shop for testing, new brushes, and get the new style starter drive installed.

A friend thinks it is the windings and replacement would be a better solutions but we are only guessing. Thank you for your advise.

If yours is shot go to a salvage yard and get another original style to rebuild.

Around here you carry the old one into the shop, they pull one off the shelf, pay the man and go put it back on the tractor for around a hundred bucks.

Thank you all for the suggestions and information. The starter had been working just fine until last fall when it would only click a little. Took it off and cleaned up the inside and used a jumper battery and worked fine. Installed and worked fine this spring for a couple of starts. But then, last week I started and ran for a few seconds and could not reach the choke and it died. Now we are back to the click when the starter switch is pressed. Same as last fall. The thought was the armature winding and when a certain spot is hit, it fails to engage the starter. BUT, you have a green horn here. Again, my car friend suggested a new starter. All comments would be appreciated.

sounds like it is jamming in the flywheel teeth. Loosen the bolts just a little , put tractor in 5th and rock wheels. Probably hear a POP, then it will work.

How old are your battery cables? I think mine had the original cables on it when I got it. After converting to 12 volts and going through a couple of starters, I finally replaced the cables. Inside the insulation was all corroded and useless. Just another thought.

Dwight,
A lot of H and M Farmalls have this problem, including my H. The starter gear hits and locks up against the ring gear without meshing properly. At first the problem seems to be electrical, but I am betting it is not.

Put the tractor in 5th gear with clutch engaged (ignition switch OFF) and then rock the back wheels as hard as you can and the gears should unlock. You might hear a "click" as the starter gear comes free.
Another method is to loosen the starter mounting bolts slowly until you hear the "click", then retighten the bolts.

If I start my H by not pressing on the starter button hard enuf the starter often gives kind of a stutter and I get the lockup. If I press hard I rarely have the problem.

Thank you so much, all of you are very helpful with you suggestions. I think there is a good chance the starter shaft is being held up against the flywheel but called a mechanic that works on starters and visited with him for a while. Bottom line is I asked him to look at inside of starter and give his recommendations. Will post the solution when we get it figured out. Thank again everyone.

It is fixed and works like the day it came from the factory. Had a local guy repair and the wire was twisted off the post on the inside of the starter. Good advise from everyone. THANK YOU GUYS.
