Combine engine question

Ok, got a question from someone on the OldIHC truck boards. Says he found a GRD214 engine for his truck that the seller states came out of an IHC combine. I am no expert, but I have never heard or seen of that engine being put into a combine as a factory option.

Sounds like a farmer adaptation/mod to me.

Does any one here know for sure?

Can't be sure, but I think that was the engine in some of Dad's 125,125SP, and 125SPV IH combines. I do remember Dad saying they took Combine engines and put them in trucks.

The first IH self-propelled harvester-thresdher, the 123 SP, had a 6 cylinder flat-head (side-valve) IH built HD-213 engine in it. This is effectively the same engine that IH put in the D-2 and D-15 (1937-1940) trucks. Later became the Green Diamond engine

Our 122 pull types had flat head 6's, I think Continental.
127 & 141 self-propelled had Silver Diamond 6 cylinders.
Ive seen references to IH trucks with different Diamond engines.
I have a '49(?) ih pickup with a flathead 6.I think its a KB-12

My dad told me it was a continental. He is 90 now and would still say it was a continental. I bow to those older than me on the board. Ours was scrapped 1n 1960. Jim

ok, I can help a little with the answers to some of the questions around the IHC truck engines.

The only truck flathead 6 that IHC used in the 40's was the GRD214 or GRD233. The black, red, and silver diamond engines were all valve in head. If Continental made a flathead 6, I am not that familiar with it, but also cannot dispute it. Now, their largest truck the KB-14 used a huge Continental 6, but it too was valve in head.

A KB-12 would not have a flathead 6 in it, or it is a KB1 or a KB2. The KB12 was a full blown semi tractor truck, not a pickup.

So, sounds like the IHC combines used a flathead 6, but it was continental, not the IHC GRD series.

good discussion. I have a learned something which is my measure of a good thread.

Look at any operators manual or parts manual for the 123 SP combine and you will see that the engine is an IH flat-head six. These were modified from the pick-up engines that were then in use by IHC. The HD-213 and HD-232 engines became the GRD 214 and GRD 233 engines.
The HD engines were initially a Willy's designed engine used in the 1934 D-1 pickup, then used in the C-1 (1935) and later in the D-2(1937) and D-15 pickups. The bigger HD engine was used in the D-30 truck.
All other IH truck engines were indeed overhead valved engines.
However, on tractor drawn combines IH tended to use Continental side valve engines (Y69) for the No 60, 61, 62, and 52R combines (until the U-1 (cub engines) were available for the 52R) combines. The No 20 and 22 harvester-threshers initially used the Fuller & Johnson engines (designed for IHC), until they were taken over by Waukesha when they were referred by that name. Later they also used the U-2 (Farmall A) engines.
The Waukesha 113 cubic inch engine was modified and put in the first 2500 E-12 tractors as the new IHC 113 cubic inch engine was not ready for production

Larger pull machines used the green diamond engines. The
pull 51 and 160 machines for sure. Have two kb5's that have
had combine motors installed. Combine blocks will have
different looking serial numbers, think that they will have the
combine model incorporated such as starting with a 51.
Looked like a person would need both complete engines to
make the swap.
