Replacing Transmission Seal on Farmall B

I have a left brake on a '45 B that hardly works, and I believe it is because the band has been soaked in oil from the tranmission. I intend to take the rear axle apart and not only replace the brake band, but also replace the seal that is on the transmission box if I don't mess something up in the process.

My question is should I just order the seal, or should I buy a new retainer, retainer shims, and bearing along with? I have never done this kind of replacement so I don't know what I am going to run in to when I start taking things apart (hopefully it all fits back together)!

You should not need a retainer or shims just the seal. The retainer does not need to come out. You should replace the seal in both the transmission and also in the drop housing. The shaft may need some clean up at a machine shop, if it is grooved the new seals won't hold.

Thanks for your response! Where is that drop housing seal at? I can"t picture in my head where that would be.

to replace the final seal you will need to remove the brake drum then the cap on the final so the diff shaft can come out thru that opening then you will find the seal in the final

Thanks for the info! I haven't taken apart the rear end before. Will the gear shafts just slide out of the differential after I unbolt the rear axle housing from the transmission case, as well unbolt the drawbar? I have an engine hoist to help move things around, but I just don't know what I am going to quite run into when I start taking things apart.

Yes the shaft will slide out of the transmission as you separate the drop housing (final drive) from the transmission. It is heavy- be sure you have the hoist attached securely. Once you separate it, remove the cover over the bearing and remove the set screw from the brake drum and bump the shaft out through the drum and the final using a big hammer and a block of wood. The bearing will come out with the shaft.
