Farmall 400 hydraulics

How do you bleed the hydraulics on a Farmall 400 Gas. The pump hummes and whine wjen idling, when I work the hydraulic controls and put it under unload it stops making the noises. Thanks for any help.

The pilot screen and orifice might need to be cleaned in the Hydraulic control block (first component in the valve block) There are often noises, if the screen and orifice are clean, And the hole is the correct diameter (see archives for pilot valve drilling) it should be quieter. It may have air, but it would hesitate on implement lift, and have other symptoms. Jim

Jim I did a quick search last night at work but did not come up with much. Can you explain this pilot valve drilling? I may need to try that on my 400 as the pump kinda whines when all three valves are in neutral. Pump does not get hot though.

Thanks for the credit, Jim, but my F-400 is noisy too, especially when turning if it is cold. It has IH power steering. I have never tried to fix the noise but I'd like to.

The orfice with screen is in the regulator valve block. The original size of the orfice was .024. The co. increased that size to .031 on the 560's and then used it in all tractors. Drilling it out may not do anything for a continuous noise in neutral, but if it is burping off and on pressure it should help. Always a good idea to at least make sure the screen is in good shape and clean as they collapse. If it is not broken, you can cut end of screen off to clean thourally and then roll it back to seal end. You need wire gauge drill or orfice cleaning tools as .031 is a pretty small hole. A gauge put in the plug on side of the regulator block should read well less than 100 psi in neutral, more like 40 psi if it is working correctly. I often drill them oversize on worn tractors but that is usually on the 4 & 560's with teledepth hitch valves. A short rubber hose instead of solid pipe at the pump end will reduce noise. Later pipes were made with hose section.
