I"m thinking of buying this 966 and selling my 766.The owner and I are 1K apart. I offered 3500 and he"s at 4500.Don"t know if we can meet in the middle or not.
I"m wondering why the paint on the side panels is red like its a 56 or 86 series instead of white like the 66 series are? Does this mean its a 1971? Thanks Kent

Is there something wrong with your 766? Why do you want the 966? I have owned several of both over the years and I'll take a 766 over a 966 any day. Need some more information....

Other than the smooth rear tires that is a good looking 966. It looks like it hasn't been messed with. I would do that in a heartbeat - it is a really good price at 4500. If I could find one for that and it ran it would be on the trailer.

The 966 is no 806, but it is a good tractor. Spent many hours on one.

The side panels are red because whoever repainted it either had no idea what he was doing, or the owner wanted them that way.

Thanks for the comments and information Guys.Yes i would like to keep both, but money and storage are not that plentyful. I think it looks in pretty good condition. Will i have any problem switching fenders to the 9 and cab to the 7? everything should be easy to switch right? I think i'll go check it out tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. Kent

For all intents and purposes, the tractors are IDENTICAL except for the engine.

What is the reason you want to get the 966 and sell the 766? The 966 is not appreciably more powerful.

Unless something is very wrong with the 766, it would be foolish to sell it and buy this 966, because you have no idea what condition the engine, TA, or anything else is in on the 966. What begins as a "cash out" deal could turn into a major money pit.

Agreed, that's what I asked in my original
response, just not as detailed as you have asked.
He's not telling us something, which is fine.
His money, his choice. At first I thought he
might be looking for a cab but then he asked if
the fenders from his 766 would fit over to the
966. My only guess now is something is really
wrong with the 766, or he figures he can sell the
766 for more and make some money, IDK.

My 766 is an awesome tractor. It runs flawlessly. It has a new TA and the engine doesn't use oil. I don't farm. Its a fun and pretty toy.i get a lot of compliments on it.I pull my 766 in our local stock tractor pull. Our 10000lb class is basically set up for 856 and 966 tractors. If i could switch to a 966, i would be more competitive in the 1000 and 1200 lb classes, and i would still have a loader tractor for tinkering around the yard.. Thats the only advantage.Thats why i'm trying to get the 9 as cheap as possible, because i'm figuring i will have to put a new TA in it(even though the owner says it works fine).I don't think there's a big market for old 2 wheel drive tractors so i'm not thinking i'll get big bucks for my 766 even if it is a great tractor. i would hope to break even, but i've been wrong before. I'm enjoying the discussion. Thanks Kent

Round here the 766 is much more popular than the 966. The 766 should bring a bit more money.

Thanks for the explaination, helps us understand what your actually looking for rather then shooting in the dark.

I would slap a turbo on that 766 and do some pump work and maybe some bigger injectors. You should easily run with 966's and 856's. As far as horsepower your not gaining much between the two, unless them 966's and 856's your pulling against are turbo'd as well.

In our 10000lb stock class you are allowed to have 101

rated HP and your allowed to be 15% over. So a 966 is stock at 100 HP and the 414 can be turned up to 115. The 856's can be turned up to about 105. My 766 will only go up to about 92HP. This is the only reason i'm thinking about the 866. Turbos are not allowed on stock tractors unlessoriginally equiped. Later Kent

Where are you located? I may be interested in that 766 if you follow through with your plan.

Looks like the 7 is more valuable than the 9. If you can buy that 966 for $4500, I'll give you $5500 for the 766 - if you'll deliver it to my farm.

I live in Prince Edward Island. A little island in the Atlantic ocean. I'm about 6 hours from Bangor Maine. It would be quite a haul for you from South Dakota It does scoot along the road pretty good tho. LOL Kent

Given your location your probably really limited on what tractors are actually available too! That would be a long haul for that 766. Thanks though. Now that we have the whole picture I would go for the 966, especially if your looking forward to working on it and making it as nice as your 766. Good luck.
