I am having difficulty applyng fertilizer using my 140. The chain that connects to the cog inside the rear wheel keeps coming off the cog under the middle part of the tractor. I have tightened the chain and adjusted the between the rear wheel and where it engages the fertilizer distributor. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If I am getting your message clearly, I would say the gears the chain is connected to, are somehow not straight, aligned to each other. Think of a bicycle. If you take the rear wheel of a bike and loosen up one of the bolts holding the wheel on, and cock the wheel to one side, the chain will keep falling off. Hope that helps.

there is supposed to be an idler gear to keep the
chain taut Do you have that? it mounts on the
tractor on the final drive somewhere,or maybe on the
side dresser mounting, idler gear is mounted on a
piece of flat stock about 4 inches long, adjusts by
turning on the mounting bolt. Been a long time
since I worked on one, just know there was an idler
gear.

Check your alignment. On the fertilizer assembly that the
hopper sits on: There are 2 different gear sizes, they control
feed rate, and 2 different pin holes to mount one of those drive
gears. Those control alignment.
That fertilizer/hopper attachment that bolts to the side of the
tractor was designed to fit on C,SC,A,SA, etc.

Make sure there is an idle gear on the top chain and not on the bottom. If the chain is tight and lined up it shouldnt come off.

Where did you locate this diagram. I am interested in seeing more of these diagrams if it is possible to access.

A worn chain will also give trouble. You might try a piece of new chain and see if that fixes your problem.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I have an idea of how to resolve the problem. I will report back if it works.

I adjusted the idler and still no luck. The only thing I see that I have not done is check the alignment of the chain according to the diagram. Also, while I was going to the garden with the chain on it remained on the cog. When I engaged the fertilizer distributor it started to slip after about 20 feet moving and eventually slipped off the cog.
