third party image

couple unusual questions:

I was working on a club tractor we are restoring, along the frame rails all the bolts had these star style lock washers rather than your typical lock washer. Which style would be original?

I am restoring an aftermarket Knoedler seat, there are 3 grease zert holes, but only one zert. I went to my local auto parts store and bought they only non-metric option they had, 1/4" standard zert. Got them home and they were too big. Any ideas where I might find a smaller zert? What size would have been used in the "50"s?

They are available in 1/8 npt and 1/4 nf., both would be smaller.

This is smaller than the standard 1/4" zerk.
I suspect it is 3/16" but have only been able to find 3/16" in the push in type, not threaded. I tried tapping the hole out to a 1/4" 28 twist thread but due to clearance issues are unable to.

There are 1/4 NF grease fittings. Any auto parts store should have them.

By the way the only 3/16 ones I have seen are drive in type. Lots of cars used the 1/4 NF type on tie rod ends.

Have you taken the old one out to see what size it is? Are the other two holes drilled and taped to take zerk? I have over the years come across a few zerks that are pressed in and not threaded.

I took the old one out and took it to a couple auto parts stores, they take it to the back and come back in a couple minutes and say they don't have one that size. I'm thinking Hal has it right on the head with a 3/16" zerk. I took the old one out and have started to thread it into the two remaining holes, they are threaded, but it is getting beat up.

Find the size of thread and get a tap and run it through them to clean up the threads. Don't use the old zerk because you will mess up the threads on it.

Good point and I'm not familiar with that after market seat and maybe they are oil holes also if not tapped, Hal.

Just go to the farm store and buy an assortment pack. I keep one in every tractor and vehicle. Just picked one up this weekend. 3.00 I believe.

Try a 3/16" zerk as that is the size I used on my Super C restoration in a couple places. I have some nice assortments of common items generally needed on these old tractors and equipment like, zerks, cotter pins, etc. as they are handy to have around. Those assortments can be purchased inexpensively from Amazon or Fastenal or other sources.
What model is the club tractor and I'll look in a parts catalog if I have one for the lock washer type, Hal.

Hal,
Are you sure it is a 3/16" zerk you used on your restoration? I"ve checked with a number of places, Fastenal most recently, and cannot locate a 3/16" threaded zerk. Fastenal has a 3/16" which is the press in style, but not the threaded.
The 1/8" zerk they carry has a larger thread, near 1/2" and the 1/8" designation is in relation to the nipple size. There isn"t enough clearance to tap and insert a 1/4" zerk. I might paint, move the 1 zerk I have 3 times to grease all 3 joints and call it good.

Don, I don't know how much this will help you as the ones we replaced were on the fast hitch and per the IH Super C parts catalog are part no. 110 161 which is noted only as a 3/16" lubrication fittings. I looked in my grease fitting assortment and it contains 3/16" fittings but they are all the drive or press type as they have a round shoulder beneath the nipple. The ones on my tractor do in fact have a hex shoulder indicating they are screw in type with threads. The drive ones in my assortment have concentric rings cut into the shank as an aid to retaining them in whatever they would be installed in. I had some help on my restoration as it was done in his heated building (before I had one built) and just remember they were broken off is why they were replaced. I can't recall if they were obtained from CaseIH or not at this point but with the hex shoulder they are screwed in. If you know a good machinist you might have them take a good look at what you have to determine if the hole is in fact threaded (as they would have a thread gauge) or if what you think are threads are from the drive type with the concentric ridges cut into them. And again those on my tractor are definitely screw in type which were obtained from CaseIH as they have the hex shoulder to be installed with a wrench or socket and I don't recall cutting threads for them but again Brian might have put the new ones in when I wasn't present but he doesn't recall anything unusual about them, Hal.

Hal, thank you so much for looking, I really appreciate all your help. I called my local Case-IH dealer, they initially could not find that part number, then found reference to it and showed it being changed. They only had access to the 3/16" press in style. I might end up having to go to a junk yard to find them.
Thanks again.
Don

I got the email, thank you. I'm on the phone with my Case-IH dealer now, they see the parts depot listing, they see quantity 7 for part 110 161 but the description is listed as "housing".

Your IH Super C parts catalog, what page is that part number listed?

Dealer also said if they knew exactly where on a Super C the zerk was used, they could probably track it down. Was it every zerk or just a specific one?

Thank you again, please don't inconvenience yourself, I'm sure I can find a work around.

It is reference no. 13 on page 201 and the part is described on page 202. My Super C parts catalog is TC-44B and Revision 4. There are two of them on the fast hitch. A lot of times the part name at the depot is not correct but can't be sure and don't know if they will work with the parts guy to get a better description or not. Your dealership will most likely know, Hal.
P.S. Both of these zerks on my tractor are identical with the hex shoulder.

Thank you Hal, I see Fastenal carry's a 3/16" zerk, I'll try those.

The club tractor is an H, don't know what year but it did come in rear steel.

Thanks again
Don

The parts catalog might have a mis-print but this is what is called out for the frame rails in my TC-27E parts catalog for the Farmall H/HV.
For the left frame rail it calls out (4) 1/2" split lock washers and (4) 5/8" external tooth lock washers unless a HV model and then only (2) are required.
For the right frame rail it calls out (4) 1/2" external tooth lock washers and (4) 5/8" split lock washers unless a HV model and then only (2) are required.
I don't know why both sides wouldn't be the same but that is how the parts catalog has them noted common to the frame rails. If known how they were removed from the tractor I would suggest putting them back in the same manner. Maybe someone can provide some additional clarification, Hal.
