Farmall 400 Brake Disk

Hi All and Happy Easter!

Woking on my Farmall 400 Diesel and am unable to remove the fixed brake disk closest to the rear end housing.

Need to remove to fix leaking oil seal on brake shaft. Are these attached to the housing by bolts on the inside? Do I need to remove the top of the rear end/transmission to get to them?

Thanks

Chuck McDonald

Pull the seals out with a few sheet metal screws and a slide hammer. Leave the pinion carrier in place. Jim

Look close on the back edge and you can find some slots to use to pry it out. Needs to come out pretty even. Has a oring on it and fits pretty tight. Or put a long 5/8 fine thread bolt in the pinion shaft end hole and with something heavy to slide (or slide hammer or other) and hammer the pinion shaft out and the plate will come out also. Inspect the shaft and bearing and just slide it back in if good. Seal is easy to remove and install with the plate removed. May also need the oring if damaged.

Chuck - The inner disk/seal retainer is a tight slip fit into the main housing. Look carefully around perimeter of the disk - there are several (4?) spots where the disk is chamfered (wire brushing the perimeter helps make the chamfers evident).

To remove the disc simply insert a chisel into one of the chamfers and give it a few taps. Now move the chisel to the chamfer 180 deg opposite and repeat. The disk should begin to separate from the tranny.

Once it gets started, a pry bar or large screwdriver will lever the the disk the rest of the way out.

I use BobM's technique with the addition of a couple more chisels. Tap each just a little at a time, evenly, so the retainer doesn't bind and break.
