Farmall 706D

I have a 706 diesel (282). What plow should i use with this tractor?
Also i can buy a fast hitch 13' cultivator for cheap. Anyone use that
specific one? Thanks..

Much depends on your soil. 4-14s 4-16s are fairly commonly used. Some can pull 5 , but in sandy loam.

706 is a 3 plow tractor here.No way it even think about 4.....

We had a 756 gas for about ten years. It played with 4- 14s. Probably the toughest soil in the world here in s.w. Pa. Limestone clay.

Come plow our irrigated Peach Valley 'dobe....You really want to make 'er snort,plow up a pasture thats had COWS on it....

We pulled 4-14s with ours. One gas and one deisel and had no problems. Some heavy soil and some not plus a lot of hills for T/A work.

If you're asking what size moldboard plow should you use, this question gets asked at least once a week about a tractor model and there's no real agreement on plow size for any tractor, because personal experiences on plow size for a particular model of tractor vary.

If you have heavy ground and/or want to plow deep, you're likely looking at a 3-plow tractor. Packed ground and pasture/hay ground pulls hard, too.

If you want to plow beach sand 4 inches deep, it likely will pull 6-16 or even a larger plow.

Anything in between is possible somewhere depending on soil types, hills, plowing depth, plowing speed, tires, proper weighting, proper draft, tractor/engine condition, plow bottom types, etc.. How hard you want to work the tractor comes into play, too. If you want a buster bar, harrow, or packer behind the plow, that will cost horsepower and may narrow the plow some, too.

FWIW, 4-14 is likely as much as it would pull here, but you'd be working the snot out of that engine much of the time, which I would say is something you should do at your own risk with a 50 year old D-282. TA would get a fair amount of use with 4-14 on a 706 here, too.

The fast hitch field cultivator may be a Model 45 or a similar machine. If so, it's not a fancy machine, not a bad machine, and not a high-dollar machine today in any of it's incarnations, either. Vibra-shanks are good if the springs aren't wore out or sprung. Shank pivot can wear out, too. Shank parts should still be available, and a variety of sweeps/shovels/points are available from CIH and from aftermarket suppliers.

Should have included: Used the 756 with a 4-14 National plow with the oliver bottoms, also used a 3 bottom 14 " fast hitch plow. They pulled about equally hard or easy. Only thing, with the Int plow you could disc and harrow a lot less. Plow hard, disc easy or plow easy and disc hard!

Thanks for the input. My soil here isn"t to bad. I"m going to go with 4-14s. The cultivator is a 4 row IH 83. Any input on this would be great. Thanks?
