SMTA DIESEL

1st serial number of the diesel was 60004, last was 81848. BUT the other numbers were mixed in with the gas version, ie there was not a separate list of serials. Number produced was 2705.

CNKS, that's the first diesel tractor serial number built in the last month of production. Diesel serial numbers go higher. Think the person who had the first SMTAD regular production tractor built also had a real high number one also.
Couple I have seen. 82036-S, 82730-S. Highest diesel reported to RPM. is over 83000. May not be the highest number diesel left though.
Correction, looked and the owner of diesel 60004 has a gas 83522 listed.

So, I take it that someone kept up with the first number each month that got the diesel engine, but subsequent numbers were assigned as the the tractor came down the line, whether gas or diesel, with no record? This means that a given numeric serial, say 78270 for example, could have been either a gas tractor or a diesel tractor?

Dave, the numbers came from Guy Fay's data book, a lot more data has been discovered after it was printed. Ken Updike's and Guy Fay's data books say the last SMTA (engine not listed) was 83523.

More data is continually being published, the actual engines used are probably somewhere in the existing data or will be --I haven't ever searched the data on the WI Historical Society.
