Electrall (tractor mounted)

Hello everyone.

My family's got a Farmall 450 with the Electrall generator attachment, i.e., the tractor-mounted gearbox, generator mounting bracket(s) and generator.

These don't appear to be too popular as we've not seen another like it here in Northern IL... although we've seen the pull-behind Electrall generators on occasion.

How popular are these tractor-mounted Electrall units in other parts of the US?

If we were looking to acquire another tractor-mounted Electrall, where might we find one?

I didn't even know the things existed until I started coming here. I grew up German Mennonite (read VERY stingy) and that was not the kind of tool that anyone we ever knew invested money in. I've still never seen one in person. The last one I have seen online was missing a gear or something and they were still mighty proud of it. Hang onto the one you have - just never know when one will make itself known.

Here's some background to my original post:

My father bought the Electrall, complete, perhaps 15 or 20 years ago at a local auction ("local" means within 50mi of the farm here in Northern IL). He mounted it on the side of the 450 at some later time and it's been there since. I know it works "mechanically" and I think it works "electrically" (meaning it'll product power at the outlets).

The other "Electrall" accessories, e.g., the baler motor, we do not own.

In later years, I bought an Electrall owner's manual for the unit via Ebay and gave it to my father for a Christmas present.

It's never been used for anything productive to my knowledge, i.e., it's never been used for backup power during an outage.

I took pictures of it a few years ago, mounted on the 450, but I can't find them as-yet. I'll take some more (or find the ones I've got!) and post them here when I can.

I will post, now, some images of an Electrall brochure that I happened upon. I hope I manage to post them correctly; this is my first time here

)

The Electrall had a precedent.

This is only conjecture on my part but I suspect the IH engineer who brainstormed the 10-20 rig also developed the Electrall. He probably wet his pants when he first saw the prints for the new TA/IPTO SMTA/SW6TA tractor. Don"t know how he managed to sell the electric IPTO idea to management when the new design already had a new mechanical IPTO.

Wattage is on tag.

I don't think that $5000 is very "Proud". The 400 was worth about $3000 and a trailer Electrall is worth about $2000. It's no big deal to find a trailer Electrall. Let me see you find a sidemount Electrall for sale when you want one. Some say that only 103 were sold. Quite a few were cannibalized to build homemade gensets.

There is a fellow in MN who has reproed several sidemount gearboxes. I believe one of them went to MO where the eBay 400/Electrall is/was located.

I haven't followed the status on that tractor since the failed auctions last fall or the sale of the gearbox but I know both parties. An email to either could bring me up to date.

That is a pretty neat option to have. I like the tractor mounted ones way more than the trailer ones. What county are you in in N IL? I am near Janesville up here.

I haven't seen that picture before. It is probably the Springfield, MO tractor due to the front frame weights and the small fuel tank.

Here's a Farmall 400 with mounted Electrall at the Canandaigua NY steam show a couple years ago.

Incidentally the 400 had a very nicely done Cummins diesel repower.

Bob, There was a 1954 SMTA with a frame mounted Electrall unit displayed with an IH hay baler which had a large GE electric motor of the same period at the Albert Lea 2011 RPRU in Minnesota. I was told it was run a few times during the show although I never saw the combination in action. It is pictured on page 57 of the RPRU show book for 2011. Certainly an interesting display for sure, Hal.

The owner of the Albert Lea rig is looking for a trailer combine to convert to electric. He also wants a Fast Hitch Electrall. Not sure but maybe it would take two generators to run a combine.

I've been thinking it would be kewl to run three sickle bar mowers off a SMTA/400/450. Right, left, and forward center. The two extra mowers would run with electricity.

I found an Electrall in my barn and did not know what it is until reading this post. Do you have an idea what they are worth?

Depends on condition and completeness.

Most valuable is the sidemount Electrall. If properly advertised and the owner is not in a hurry, it should bring over $5000 and maybe alot more to a motivated buyer.

Next would be a Fast Hitch Electrall. They may have a rarity approaching the sidemount. However, the unit is not as desireable as the location limits other tractor applications at the rear.

Trailer Electralls can be found fairly easily. Good units can be had for between $1500 and $2000.

IH pickup truck Electralls have to be extremely rare. I haven"t seen a parts breakdown on one yet so I don"t know if they can be built from another type of IH/GE Electrall. Anyway, they shouldn"t be worth much. Maybe $500.

Thanks for the great pictures, from the angle of all the pictures I have seen I thought it ran off the belt pulley gear. What drive gear in the tranny does the belt drive adapter run off of being so far forward ??
Nice looking re-power there also.
