Thanks for all your help !!!

After tearing the carb apart cleaning it up and a lot of new parts. The tractor started right up and is surprisingly quiet even without a muffler. Still have a long way to go but it sure was nice to her it run.

New question:

After running for about 5 minutes the plugs a very black also the only way it will stay running is with the choke completely closed. What next ?

Thanks again to everyone. This tractor would be a lawn ornament without the people of this forum.

Stan...First, unless it is very cold, you really don't need too much choke, certainly not 5 minutes worth. If I understood you correctly, it sound like you are choking it too much.

When I start a cold engine, I choke it full, but after the engine starts, I reduce the choke as quickly as possible to no choke at all. A minute or so has been more than enough for me. Lean out the idle as much as possible...that will help burn off the carbon and keep the plugs clean.

Don't know if cubs have the inlet screen on carb, but if so you may want to check this as well. Letter series have a screen in inlet elbow which gets clogged.

Stan, black sooty plugs are an indication that the carb. is set too rich. Clean the plugs, start the tractor and adujust the carb to run a bit leaner. This should clear things up. One question: Is the exhaust black too? Watch the exhaust at idle and when you power up.

if all the passages are clear in the carb check your gas tank and sediment screen for restriction, could be why you have to keep the choke on. Does she smoke much and what color smoke if she does

Peter

Haven't really seen any smoke yet Gas atnk is not back on the tractor yet. I rigged a temporary. Doesn't appear to be a flow problem.

still could be a flow problem be sure all carb passages are clear also check carb mounting gasket and manifold gaskets for possible air leak that will give you a lean mixture making use of the choke necessary to keep it running
