I bought a 340 and checked that the PTO worked but not if it turned off which it doesn't. Need a little help. It's a 1958 with the lever on the left side. Can it be adjusted? Looks like there is an access hole with a plug on top.

If it has the access plug in the top of the pto housing, it can be adjusted without removing the pto unit. Procedure is outlined in the pto manual which is usually available on ebay.

I typed this as I was walking out the door yesterday and reread today and was confused myself. The PTO is running all the time. I'll try to find information on adjusting. If anybody can give me the procedure from experience it would be appreciated.

there should be a cap on top of the pto. 2 screws with nuts to hold them in place.

loosen the nuts, put the PTO lever in the nuetral position (1/2 way between up and down), turn both screws tight. move the pto lever up and down a few times and then back off each screw about 1 turn. tighten the nuts back down to hold the adjustment screws in place.

that should be a good starting point for adjustment.

Thanks Mike for the response but sounds like mine is different. This cap screws out and is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. I looked at a 340 that a guy has setting outside and it has a cap on the PTO. Mine is a '58 and must be different. I contacted the guy I bought the tractor from and he said you can stop it by hand but I'm reluctant to try this but I scanned old forums for 340 PTO listings and there was another guy who said the same thing and he claimed it was due to drag along from the heavy fluids until warmed up.
